STOPHAM BRIDGE

This iconic bridge crosses the Arun River, to the west of Pulborough in West Sussex.

Stopham Bridge is a grade 1 listed monument and dates back to the 14th century, its seven stone arches that exist today most likely built in 1422-23.

A part of the bridge was destroyed during the English Civil War and replaced by a drawbridge. The bridge's central arch was modified to fit taller vessels in 1822 and bears this date.

I painted this at home from a series of photos which I took while paddle boarding on the beautiful Arun River.

The White Hart Pub is next to the bridge and is the ideal place to launch from and refresh afterwards.

Stopham is also famous for the 11th century Saxon/Norman church of St Mary the Virgin.
