WATLINGTON HILL

WATLINGTON HILL

This is my first ever round painting, I saw the canvas in a shop and knew immediately that I wanted to do this painting.

I took the photo a couple of years ago and always planned to paint it. The scene draws the viewer into the serenity of nature, the glorious English countryside, the peace and quiet only interrupted by the calls of Red Kites up above.

I feel that the round canvas really helps to emphasise this perfectly.

It was painted at home using oil paints on a liquid white ground. I initially set myself four hours, in which I managed to get the main painting done, I then spent a few hours refining the detail in the fence and shadows.

I added the Red Kites as a reference to this location in The Chilterns. The area around Watlington was central in the re-introduction of Red Kites which has been hugely successful, they now fly majestically across much of central/southern England.
